This iconic soup from Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula is light yet deeply flavorful — chicken, crispy tortillas, and tangy lime in a fragrant broth. Perfect for chilly evenings or soothing the soul on a tired afternoon.
Ingredients
- 🍗 300 g cooked chicken breast, shredded (2 cups)
- 🧅 100 g white onion, sliced thin (1 small)
- 🫒 15 ml olive oil (1 tbsp)
- 🧄 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 🌿 1 tsp dried oregano
- 🫑 1 small green bell pepper, sliced
- 🍅 1 medium tomato, chopped (80 g)
- 💧 1 L chicken broth (4 cups)
- 🍋 60 ml fresh lime juice (4 tbsp)
- 🧂 Salt and black pepper to taste
- 🫓 4 small corn tortillas, cut into strips and fried
- 🌿 Optional: fresh cilantro for garnish
- 🌶️ Optional: sliced chili for heat
Preparation
- 1️⃣ Heat olive oil in a pot. Sauté onion, garlic, and bell pepper until soft.
- 2️⃣ Add tomato and oregano. Cook for 3–4 minutes, stirring often.
- 3️⃣ Pour in broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer for 10 minutes.
- 4️⃣ Add shredded chicken and lime juice. Simmer 5 more minutes. Season to taste.
- 5️⃣ Serve hot, topped with crispy tortilla strips and fresh cilantro.
