Tips & variations
Tip
Chill the tequila, sangrita, soda, and glasses before assembling. A Vampiro tastes much sharper and more refreshing when very little ice melts before the first sip.
Why it works
Tomato gives the sangrita savory body, orange and lime provide bright acidity, hot sauce and Tajรญn add chile heat, and tequila contributes earthy agave flavor. Grapefruit soda lifts the heavier sangrita with bitterness, sweetness, and carbonation so the drink stays refreshing rather than dense.
Storage and reheating
The sangrita base can be prepared up to 2 days ahead and refrigerated in a sealed bottle. Stir well before using. Assemble the cocktail only immediately before serving so the grapefruit soda remains fizzy. Do not freeze or reheat.
Variation
For a smokier Vampiro, replace one-quarter of the tequila with joven mezcal. For a brighter version, add 30 ml fresh grapefruit juice before topping with soda.
