Description
This dish is a staple of Chinese home cooking β gently steamed fish infused with fresh ginger, scallions, and a light soy dressing. Clean, elegant, and soul-soothing, itβs as close as food gets to a quiet blessing.
Ingredients
- π 500 g whole white fish or fillets (like sea bass or tilapia), cleaned (1.1 lb)
- π« 15 g fresh ginger, julienned (1 tbsp)

30 g scallions, cut into long strips (2 stalks)
- π« 15 ml sesame oil (1 tbsp)
- π« 30 ml light soy sauce (2 tbsp)
- π§ Salt to taste
- π§ 15 ml water (1 tbsp)
- π Optional: cooked jasmine rice for serving
Preparation
- 1οΈβ£ Pat fish dry and lightly salt both sides. Place on a heatproof plate that fits inside a steamer.
- 2οΈβ£ Top fish with ginger and half of the scallions.
- 3οΈβ£ Steam over boiling water for 8β10 minutes (fillets) or 12β14 minutes (whole fish), until flesh flakes easily.
- 4οΈβ£ Meanwhile, heat soy sauce, sesame oil, and water in a small pan until warm.
- 5οΈβ£ Pour sauce over the steamed fish. Garnish with remaining scallions and serve immediately.
