A traditional Mexican dessert often served during holidays and colder months 🍠 Warm sweet potatoes simmer slowly in a syrup made from piloncillo, cinnamon, and cloves. The result is a comforting, spiced treat rich in heritage and flavor — perfect for cozy evenings or family gatherings.
Ingredients
- 🍠 500 g orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks (17.5 oz)
- 🍯 200 g piloncillo (or dark brown sugar) (7 oz)
- 💧 500 ml water (2 cups)
- 🌰 1 cinnamon stick
- ✨ 2 whole cloves
- 🍋 Optional: zest of ½ orange
Preparation
- 1️⃣ In a large saucepan, combine water, piloncillo, cinnamon stick, cloves, and orange zest. Bring to a boil.
- 2️⃣ Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes until piloncillo dissolves.
- 3️⃣ Add sweet potatoes and cook uncovered for 30–40 minutes until tender and syrup thickens.
- 4️⃣ Serve warm with syrup spooned on top, or chill for later 🍠🫙
