Description
Known as Japan’s ultimate savory pancake, Okonomiyaki is a mouthwatering mix of shredded cabbage, batter, and tasty toppings 🍳🥢. Crispy outside, tender inside — it’s fun to cook and even more fun to eat!
Ingredients
- 🥬 300 g green cabbage, finely shredded (10.5 oz)
- 🥚 2 eggs
- 🌾 100 g all-purpose flour (3/4 cup / 3.5 oz)
- 💧 120 ml water or dashi stock (1/2 cup / 4 fl oz)
- 🧂 1/2 teaspoon salt (2.5 g / 0.09 oz)
- 🧅 2 green onions, thinly sliced
- 🥓 4 slices of smoked bacon (optional)
- 🛢️ Oil for frying
- 🍶 Okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayo, dried bonito flakes (for garnish)
Preparation
- 1️⃣ In a bowl, whisk together flour, water (or dashi), eggs, and salt until smooth.
- 2️⃣ Add shredded cabbage and green onions. Mix well to coat.
- 3️⃣ Heat oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
- 4️⃣ Pour in batter, shape into a thick round, and top with bacon slices.
- 5️⃣ Cook 4–5 minutes per side until golden and cooked through.
- 6️⃣ Transfer to a plate and drizzle with okonomiyaki sauce and mayo. Sprinkle bonito flakes on top.
