Description
A vibrant and satisfying plant-based dish from central Mexico 🌵 Fresh nopal cactus paddles are sautéed with onions and chilies, then tucked into warm corn tortillas for a naturally meaty, zesty taco perfect for Lent or any meat-free day.
Ingredients
🌵 300 g fresh nopal cactus, cleaned and sliced into strips (10.5 oz)
🧅 1 small onion, sliced
🌶 1 jalapeño or serrano pepper, sliced
🧂 Salt to taste
🌽 4 corn tortillas
🍋 Optional: lime wedges and chopped cilantro for garnish
Preparation
1️⃣ Clean nopales by removing spines and rinse thoroughly. Boil in salted water for 10 minutes. Drain and rinse again to remove slime.
2️⃣ Heat a skillet and sauté onion and chili until soft.
3️⃣ Add nopales and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt.
4️⃣ Warm corn tortillas in a dry pan.
5️⃣ Fill each tortilla with cactus mixture. Garnish with lime and cilantro 🌿🌶
