Fresh, tangy, and satisfyingly plant-based — Tacos de Nopales are a traditional Mexican fasting dish made with sautéed cactus paddles, chili, and herbs. Light yet filling, they’re a staple in homes during Lent or for everyday meatless meals 🌿🌮
Ingredients
🌵 300 g nopales (cactus paddles), cleaned and sliced (10.5 oz)
🧅 1 small red onion, sliced
🌶️ 1 jalapeño, sliced thin
🌿 1 tbsp chopped cilantro (15 g / 0.5 oz)
🍋 Juice of ½ lime
🧂 Salt to taste
🌽 6 small corn tortillas
❄️ Optional: avocado slices, radish, or salsa for garnish
Preparation
1️⃣ Place sliced nopales in a dry pan and cook over medium heat until slime is released and evaporated (about 8–10 minutes).
2️⃣ Add onion, jalapeño, salt, and cook for another 5 minutes until softened.
3️⃣ Remove from heat, mix in lime juice and fresh cilantro.
4️⃣ Warm corn tortillas and fill with nopales mixture. Garnish if desired and serve warm 🌮
